How to import a bought tileset into RPG Maker MZ/MV without the corrupted look

Short answer: bought tilesets break on import for structural reasons, not artistic ones — mixed pixel sizes, category-only file names, baked shadow strips, furniture in the wrong slot, or a wrong-size autotile sheet. Work through the 6-step checklist below (free, works with any pack you legally own). Takes about 30 minutes by hand.

Guide date: 2026-09-27. Covers RPG Maker MV 1.6.x / MZ 1.3.x (48px tiles, 768×576 A2/A5 sheets, 144×192 $! charsets). Buyer questions that motivated this page (2026-09-27): “it comes out looking corrupted and doesn't show the entire tileset” and “I bought a tileset — how do I import it?”

The 6-step recipe

  1. Sort by pixel size first. MV/MZ tiles are 48px. If your pack ships 16/32/48px sets mixed together, separate them — one size per folder — or the Database slices them wrong. Note which items have no match at 48px; those are gaps the seller never shipped, not your mistake.
  2. Rename category-only files. furniture_000.png tells you nothing in the Database. Rename to category+label (furniture_sofa0_000.png) so variants are findable. Keep a mapping list of old → new names.
  3. Strip shadow borders for floor tiles. Packs often ship furniture with a baked gray bottom strip that looks dirty on light floors. Remove the bottom rows (keep the originals) for pieces that sit on floors.
  4. Check charset vs tileset format. Single furniture sprites that should be placed like events belong in img/characters/ as $! sheets (144×192, one sheet = one object, no shift) — not in the tileset slots.
  5. Autotiles must be the exact sheet size. MV/MZ A2/A5 sheets are 768×576. A floor texture pasted at any other size will not autotile — resize to the sheet, not the other way round.
  6. Import path: copy 48px tiles to your project's img/tilesets/, charsets to img/characters/, then Database → Tilesets tab → assign slots. Credit the artist per their license terms.

Free helper: tile-size sorter

Type a tile's pixel size and what it is. The helper tells you which folder it belongs in and whether it is MV/MZ-native. Everything runs locally — nothing leaves your device.

Free sample: import checklist excerpt + rename-map sample

Launch-kit piece 9 for the Import Fixer: the two downloads above are a free slice of the paid tool's paper trail — the 1-page MV/MZ import checklist excerpt and 5 sample fixed-name mappings (furniture_000.png → furniture_sofa0_000.png style), rendered from original test data, never seller art. Use them in your games freely.

Sample license: royalty-free use of the sample files in your games (commercial OK). Do not resell or redistribute the raw files as a pack, bundle, template, or dataset. Tileset art itself always belongs to its sellers — your pack's own license still governs the art, and most packs require artist credit. “RPG Maker” is a trademark of Kadokawa Corporation; this is an independent guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by Kadokawa.
