The 3-step recipe
- Learn the exact tile grid. A 256×128 sheet of 32×32 tiles is 8 columns × 4 rows = 32 tiles. If margin or spacing is wrong by 1px, every tile drifts. Drop the PNG into our free Tileset Splitter & Converter — it runs 100% in your browser, no upload — and try tile W/H + margin/spacing until each tile looks right. Export JSON/CSV/TSX/TMX from the same grid.
- Open it in Tiled. In Tiled 1.10: New Map → Orthogonal → set your tile W/H → New Tileset → point at your PNG with the same tile W/H + margin/spacing. If you exported TSX/TMX from the splitter, keep the image filename matching your Prefix (the file's
<image source>points atPREFIX.png— rename the PNG to match, or edit the source path). Mixed sizes (16px ground + 32px trees/chests/signs) need one layer per size — Tiled still has no native per-layer tile size (Tiled#149). - Import into Godot 4 with Nearest. Drag tile textures into the FileSystem dock → select them → Import tab → Filter: Nearest → Reimport. Scale TileMap nodes by integers only (2x, 3x). Expect Godot's 3×3 autotile to drop outer-diagonal corners by design (Godot#31003) — the fix is a full 47-variant blob set, not a different filter.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry tiles | Godot default smoothing | Filter: Nearest + Reimport, integer scale |
| Tiles offset / sliced wrong | Wrong margin or spacing | Re-split with exact margin/spacing in the splitter |
| TMX opens with missing image | PREFIX.png mismatch | Rename PNG to Prefix, or edit <image source> |
| Outer corners missing | Godot 3×3 bitmask limit | Full 47-corner set (exporter box below) |
